At both that tour and on this night it felt like you were witnessing the early days of something truly special.Īfter Styles show I was talking with a friend in the Forum Club. arena tour back in 1984 for The Unforgettable Fire. There was a feeling watching Styles on this night not unlike watching U2 on their first U.S. Just like Stewart, who could go from the rock of "Every Picture Tells A Story" to the pop joy of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy," Styles effortlessly segued on this night from the aforementioned playfulness of "Watermelon Sugar" to the beauty and drama of the epic sing along anthem "Sign Of The Times," which had a similar feel to the way U2's "40" back used to close their early arena shows back in the early '80s. But Styles has that same charisma and playfulness on stage, as well as the ability, like Stewart, to seamlessly move between styles and sounds of music.
Admittedly that might be because I had just interviewed Stewart this week, so he was on my mind. Watching Styles on this night the artist I kept thinking of in association was Rod Stewart. He had the gentility down perfectly in songs like the sultry, sublime "She" and the gorgeous ballad, "Falling." As skillful as the quieter moments were, the more upbeat numbers, such as "Lights Up," the One Direction track "What Makes You Beautiful" and, of course, the rollicking "Watermelon Sugar," were just as expertly delivered, invigorating the entire building with a feverish energy.
